Safe access zones reform proposal

Closes 31 May 2019

Opened 17 Apr 2019

Overview

The key focus of this consultation is to obtain stakeholder feedback on how best to protect patients from harassment and intimidation when accessing abortion services, and other relevant health services.

A Discussion Paper entitled ‘Safe access zones – Proposal for reform in Western Australia’ has been prepared which explores the value of introducing safe access zones and how a legislative framework might operate in Western Australia. We are one of the few jurisdictions in Australia yet to consider the implementation of safe access zones.

You are invited to read the Discussion Paper before completing this survey (see bottom of page to download discussion paper).

The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. You do not have to comment on all the questions, and can focus on those areas that are important to you.

Confidentiality matters

Unless marked as confidential, all correspondence will be regarded as public and documents may be made available on the Department of Health website or viewed by members of the public on request. If you wish for your response to remain confidential please check the box at the beginning of the survey.

Why We Are Consulting

Since abortion was legalised in Western Australia, there have been ongoing instances of individuals being approached by protestors when attempting to access abortion services. This constant stream of protests can cause anxiety and distress for patients as well as staff working at the abortion service clinics.

The purpose of this consultation is to seek stakeholder feedback on the impacts of introducing safe access zone legislation in Western Australia, and whether this would be an appropriate approach to protecting the health and safety of patients when accessing health services, including abortion services.

You are welcome to provide additional feedback that may not be related to any of the questions, or ideas for options that have not been considered. Your input is crucial as it will support the development of the reform, and assist in identifying issues of concern.

You can provide feedback through the following options:
