Prescribing by registered nurses and pharmacists

Closes 2 Feb 2026

9. Withdrawal of prescribing agreements (applicable to designated registered nurse prescribers and pharmacist prescribers)

These questions are about regulatory options which could be used in the event that a prescribing agreement is considered to pose a significant risk to the health, safety and welfare of a person or the public.

Regulatory options are:

  • Include a regulation that allows the CEO of the Department of Health to direct a prescribing agreement be withdrawn.
  • Use existing provisions within the Act to restrict the professional authority of the health practitioners involved, which could be limited to restricting them from continuing the prescribing agreement. Note: if a health practitioner's authority is restricted under the Act, their respective registration Board can be notified.
9.1. How supportive are you of a regulation that allows the Department to direct the withdrawal of a prescribing agreement, where there is significant risk to the health, safety and welfare of a person or the public?
9.2. How supportive are you of using the current provisions of the Act, to restrict a health practitioner's professional authority, instead of there being a specific regulation about withdrawal of prescribing agreements?
