A position statement on direct-to-consumer genetic testing
Overview
In 2013, the WA Department of Health, through the Office of Population Health Genomics (OPHG), released a position statement on direct-to-consumer genetic testing. This position statement was intended to assist consumers and healthcare professionals to consider the issues associated with direct-to-consumer genetic testing and to highlight the importance of genetic counselling in this process.
OPHG is now looking to update the position statement to reflect the significant advances in genetic testing. In the updated position statement, OPHG propose a set of criteria that should be met, aimed to support consumers and health care professionals to make informed decisions regarding the use of direct-to-consumer genetic tests. The position statement will be supplemented with a companion document, which will provide additional information on each criterion, such as the rationale behind its development and some possible ways in which the criterion could be met.
Why your views matter
OPHG are seeking feedback on seven draft criteria outlined in the position statement through this online survey. Criteria 1 to 4 relate to processes to support the consumer and criteria 5 to 7 pertain to the attributes of the test. Additional input is requested for some criteria to help inform the supporting material that will be provided in the companion document.
Responses received through this survey are anonymous. Once finalised, the updated position statement and its companion document will be made available on the WA Department of Health website.
