Consent to Treatment Policy consultation

Closes 12 Sep 2025

Opened 18 Aug 2025

Overview

The Consent to Treatment Policy  is a mandatory policy under the Clinical Governance, Safety and Quality Policy Framework. The policy sets out key underlying legal principles relevant to consent, ensures there is a consistent approach in seeking and documenting consent to treatment across the WA health system and supports a collaborative healthcare culture that encourages patients and their families to ask questions, be presented with information about treatment options (including to take no action), have their choices heard and respected by health practitioners and involve their family/carers in discussions as they choose.

The Policy is approaching its 3-year policy review requirement in December 2025. The Department of Health (the Department) is seeking feedback from consumers as well as clinical and non-clinical WA Health staff on whether the policy requires amendment.

  • To enable the Department to continue supporting clinicians and Health Service Providers (HSPs) to meet their patient safety and clinical quality and legal obligations in relation to obtaining informed consent.
